The finished temple was dedicated on April 6, 1877, as the Church held its general conference that spring at the temple to coincide with the dedication. The free tour begins with a short video overview, followed by a walking tour through the temple. Comfortable shoes and modest dress are recommended, and the temple is wheelchair accessible. The tours for the Red Cliffs temple are expected to take about 40 minutes. The St. George temple underwent an extensive renovation nearly 50 years ago, then was rededicated in 1975 by President Spencer W. Kimball. The north and west additions to the temple were rebuilt to match the original architecture of the building.

Workers razed the west entrance to the temple that was added in the 1970s, exposing the old pioneer exterior. The same will be true inside, where floors altered in the 1970s are being redesigned to look more like the 1870s original. Modern workers covered support beams with steel, wrapped columns with fiberglass and drilled steel pipes called micropiles feet deep into the bedrock below the foundation. “The finishes will all be similar to the historic temple, so beautiful large archways and beautiful windows,” Kirby said. The St. George Utah Temple is scheduled to be rededicated on Dec. 10, 2023. Work has been underway for years on three of those pioneer-era temples — the Salt Lake Temple, Manti temple and St. George temple.

The existing fountain from the 1970s renovation and addition (north entry) is replaced with a new quatrefoil-shaped fountain. There is also a new fountain in the east plaza, similar to the fountain on the north side. These fountains are built from concrete stem walls, painted on the exterior and tiled on the interior with a decorative design motif. The inner portion of the fountain has a bronzed multi-tiered water feature. The design was a coordinated effort between CRSA, MGB+A and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Landscaping the St. George Utah Temple Grounds

These decora-tive motifs have been preserved on the fourth floor and reconstructed in the instruction rooms of the second floor. The motifs were also used in other subtle ways in the temple, including door hardware and altars. The simple elegance of the furniture is intended to complement the restrained beauty of the interior architecture. The furniture design is inspired by the late neoclassical style popular during the mid-19th century — a style the pioneers of southern Utah produced in simpler vernacular versions of grained pine throughout the 19th century.

West End Addition to the St. George Utah Temple Rising

Remains Lighting in New York City manufactured the metal decorative lighting fixtures, which are made of cast bronze with a two-tone finish to match the building’s hardware finishes. Other decorative fixtures are period antiques that have been refurbished and rewired for use in the temple. All lighting fixtures are historically consistent with those found in the late 1800s. During the 1940s a two-inch layer of gunite (a mixture of cement, sand, and water) and steel reinforcing was applied to the temple’s exterior to hide cracks and eliminate future cracking. The new north addition has exterior walls created of precast concrete, which are covered with a light sand and white epoxy paint to match the color and texture of the historic building.

Pioneer-era temples and renovations

A few areas of the temple, such as the celestial and sealing rooms, have gold leaf accenting. Much of the existing planting and shrubbery was replaced or added to make the grounds lusher and greener and provide better views and photo opportunities of the temple itself. The doors are made of cherry wood, cherries being a significant agricultural product in the area.

The public open house will run nearly two months, from Friday, Sept. 15, through Saturday, Nov. 11, excluding Sundays and Saturday, Sept. 30 for October 2023 general conference. The St. George Utah Temple, first dedicated on April 6, 1877, was rededicated on Dec. 10, 2023, by President Jeffrey R. Holland, a St. George native and acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Those videos are shown to small groups, usually in rooms in an adjacent meetinghouse prior to the visitors beginning the tour inside the temple.

Media Day Held for the Renovated St. George Utah Temple

Also, the section of 400 South on the temple’s north side has been changed from a two-way street to a pedestrian plaza. The St. George Utah Temple was extensively remodeled for over a year from 1937 to 1938. The lower hall was permanently divided into progressive-style muraled endowment rooms. The original tower of the St. George Utah Temple fell casualty to a lightning storm about a year after the dedication, leaving it badly damaged. A new tower was completed in 1883, taller and more majestic than the first.

In 1861, Brigham Young sent 300 families to settle St. George, hoping to establish a base for warm-weather crops, such as cotton. He announced a temple for the community in 1871, with workers transitioning from the nearly completed and nearby St. George Tabernacle to start work at the temple site. No renovation for the state’s fourth pioneer-era temple, the Logan Utah Temple, have yet been announced. The new Orem Utah Temple is scheduled for its dedication on Jan. 21. Eight other Utah temples are under construction — Deseret Peak, Ephraim, Heber Valley, Layton, Lindon, Smithfield, Syracuse and Taylorsville. Like the St. George temple was, the Salt Lake and Manti temples have been under renovation, with reconstruction of the Provo Utah Temple to begin in late February 2024.

And the St. George Utah Temple served as the Church’s first where the house of the Lord was reserved exclusively for temple worship, ordinance work and related meetings. The Kirtland Temple had been used for general worship meetings and even some civic meetings. The exterior and interior images and details of the renovations were first published Wednesday, Sept. 6, on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

Most of the temple is painted in its original white to match the historic interiors, but a few rooms have a light-colored paint, such as the celestial room and the large sealing rooms located in the annex. The windows of the St. George Utah Temple have always had clear glass, similar to other temples such as Nauvoo, Kirtland, and Salt Lake. The original 1877 wood windows were determined to be insufficient for needed thermal performance and were replaced by new wood windows made by Re-View Windows Inc. in Kansas City, Missouri. The new windows match the historic profiles and details of the original windows but have been upgraded to incorporate thermally insulated triple panes of glass. A new skylight has also been provided in the bride’s room area, using the quatrefoil motif as the basis of design.
